Our Mission:

Fairfax Elementary prepares all students to be open-minded, lifelong learners.  Through creativity, communication, and collaboration, students connect with their school, their community, and the world to make a difference!

WHAT IS IB?

Fairfax is an authorized IB World School. IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)
Think of “Primary Years Programme” (PYP) as a global term for Elementary School. The Primary Years Programme is designed for ages 3-12. It frames all learning activities throughout the school community, integrating itself within and around the Common Core Curriculum requirements. In addition to meeting federal requirements, schools offering the IB Programme must meet strict guidelines and evaluation by the International Baccalaureate Organization ® in order to attain and maintain authorization as an IB school.

As part of the IB authorization requirements, Fairfax offers instruction in a second language. Students receive instruction in Spanish each week.

The IB Primary Years Programme:

  • Encourages international-mindedness in IB students, developing global thinkers
  • Encourages a positive attitude to learning by engaging students in inquiries and developing their awareness of the process of learning so they can become lifelong learners
  • Reflects real life by encouraging learning beyond traditional subjects with meaningful, in-depth inquiries into real life issues based on the Transdisciplinary Themes
  • Emphasizes, through the IB Learner Profile, the development of the whole student – physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically

THE IB LEARNER PROFILE

HINT: Think Facebook - A profile is the description of a person’s qualities, values, and characteristics.

The IB learner profile is the IB mission statement translated into a set of learning outcomes for 21st century learners. They describe the type of students the IB program hopes to shape throughout the full continuum of IB programs. IB learners strive to become Internationally-minded. This comes for students when they begin to exhibit the Learner Profile attributes:
  • Thinkers - make decisions and creatively solve problems
  • Risk-takers - think about new things and bravely try them out
  • Inquirers - get the skills to learn things for themselves
  • Communicators - express ideas and information clearly; work well with others
  • Knowledgeable - explore concepts and ideas important to the self and the world
  • Principled - are honest, fair and show respect; take responsibility for actions
  • Reflective - think about what has been learned and done; aware of strengths and weaknesses
  • Open-minded - understand own culture and learn from others that are different
  • Balanced - use the body, brain and feelings
  • Caring - are kind and respectful; make a difference in others' lives and the world

HOW ARE WE IB?

  • We are learning to be inquirers, thinkers, communicators, and risk-takers who are knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded and well-balanced.
  • We are using an inquiry approach to learning. That means we problem solve to acquire new information.
  • We collaborate. This means we work together and learn from each other.
  • We are learning to ask and formulate answers to meaningful questions.
  • Our teachers are developing Units of Inquiry that provide significant, relevant, and challenging learning   experiences across the curriculum.
  • We act. We take what we have learned in our classrooms and apply it to new situations.
